How do I pick the right scooter for me? What are some good things to look into before buying a scooter?

Asked by susanhaarman (2points) September 5th, 2007

I just moved to the bay area and I need advice on what kind of scooter to get. I’m looking at something under $2200.

i dont know much about them, but my friend just got this one not too long ago and it’s great http://www.scootersfactory.com/150cc-lance-vintage-150-moped-scooter-p-456.html?osCsid=88m9p5jukenn26kn7mj3c4p2l3

I’m a scooter-owner, and here a couple things that I would suggest thinking about:
1. Do you want to get a motorcycle license or not? (if no, you would then need a smaller-engined scooter)
2. How many places are there who can do repairs on this type of scooter? (I have a Vespa, which is great, but in my city, there are only 2 dealers who can repair the scooter, which is really annoying)
3. Do you want used or new? (If used—are parts still easily available for this model?)

I would definitely recommend a Vespa both for style and durability, but you’ll be spending a lot more than $2200, although it would be totally worth it because Vespas do not depreciate in value in the same way that other scooters do. Other brands I’ve heard good things about and are a lot cheaper are Stella and People.
