Why did my wi-fi stop working?

Asked by Bowman4864 (13points) January 3rd, 2009

I recently bought an iPod touch and it was working perfectly for a couple of days. Seemingly out of the blue, my wi-fi stopped working correctly. My touch would find the network, connect for about 30 seconds, and then lose the network and not be able to find it again. Ive browsed around and tried all of the troubleshooting and reseting that everyone seems to be trying. No matter what i try i still cannot connect to the internet on my touch. If anyone has had this problem and was able to fix it, please help me!

Well, first you need to diagnose if it’s a problem with your wireless router or your iPod Touch.

Take your iPod to a different place with a Wi-Fi connection and see if you can connect there. If you can’t, then the problem lies with your iPod touch. Do a factory reset and see what happens.

However, I have a feeling there may be something wrong with your router. Did you try not only resetting the router but resetting the cable modem as well? Sometimes, calling the your ISP and having them send a signal to your cable modem can solve the trick as well.
The problem that you describe, however, sounds like what happens with my laptop when it’s just on the fringe on my Wireless network. Be sure that you’re using your iPod Touch with good Wi-Fi reception, or either install wireless extenders or move your router to a better location.

I have a couple of computers in my house that receive an excellent signal. Even when im right next to my router my touch still wont connect. Im experiencing the same problem at my girlfriends house, i used to connect to the network without a problem but now it seems it wont connect to any network.

Sounds like it’s a problem with the Touch then, not your router. Good thing we got that out of the way.

Did you do a factory reset through iTunes?

Yeah and it still did the same thing, i think im just going to have to take this thing into Best Buy for a new one. Thanks for your help!

Sometimes our wi-fi just stops working for some reason and nothing will recognize it. When that happens, we unplug the modem from the router and the router’s power source. For whatever reason, that works. It’s like it needs to reset.

Did you forget to pay the bills?

Yeah, that may just be the best thing….just take it into Best Buy.’
Really, I’m not sure why your Touch is doing that, esp. after a reset like that. Must be a hardware issue.

Well, good luck!
