Is Larry Flint's request for a $5 billion bailout for the porn industry necessary satire or unabashed self-promotion/publicity?

Asked by timothykinney (2743points) January 9th, 2009

Satire: Seeing how far the government will go to disrupt the free market.

Publicity: Sure to get headlines and easy to tell jokes that might improve his image.

Do you have a link for this? What is the rationale, anyway? Is it that with the financial downturn people have less money to spend on porn, and the industry has fallen on hard times (no pun intended)?

It’s just good financial sense. Everybody else is asking for money so why shouldn’t they?

I saw it on MSNBC either Olberman or Maddow, but I can’t find it. Really funny tough!

I think he was just bustin balls. The porn industry is doing quite fine, movie sales dropped, but internet sales have been largely increasing.

Are you fucking kidding me?

Pot growers need a bail out too, right Uber?

@timothykinney Yes. To both…..
Ya’ gotta give the guy credit…he is great at publicity and self promotion.

By the way…his last name is Flynt.

I point this out so that you won’t miss watching the movie about him (which was pretty good!!): The People vs. Larry Flynt

not much of a theatrical stretch for C Love….casting was spot on for her :)

Good ol’ Larry. I think he’s largely making a statement but the porn mag industry truly has suffered because of the internet. I used to wholesale porn mags and the place where I worked totally folded.

I say high-five to Larry. He’s a crude SOB, but he has an audacity that I can’t help savoring, and he knows how to make a statement.

What did that request sound like? I know…

Give me some fucking money.

pun intended dale?

To quote Abe Simpson, “A little from column A. A little from column B.”

If you have to ask, you’ll never know.

He’s got some balls, huh? Pretty funny either way.

dalepetrie's avatar

@uberbatman – YES, pun definitely intended.

I just read that the casinos are taking a hit due to the economy, so you can bet that organized crime is “suffering”. Gee, let’s get them a bailout, too.

The porn industry does not effect everyone, like the auto industry. we all need wheels. we all do not need porn.

If Mr. Flynt did this I’m pretty sure it was a statement about the stupidity and overstepping of the US government in the bailouts.
Bully for him. Mr Flynt is an employer. Mr. Flyint’s corporation pays more taxes than than the poor. Mr. Flyint creates a product for which there is a demand. Mr Flynt produces an American export. Why isn’t Obama listening??

dalepetrie's avatar

@CodePinko – Just curious, so in your view the poor should pay the same amount as or more than successful corporations in taxes? Or were you simply saying that a corporation that produces economic prosperity for the nation is a better investment in terms of payback than investing in the broke citizens? It’s not clear…I mean, I’m certain that ideologically, I would normally dispute what you just said, but I’m not sure for which reason(s).

CodePinko's avatar

Just my way of saying Flyint’s companies pay taxes.

dalepetrie's avatar

Oh, OK, can’t really disagree with that.
