Are the identity-theft-protection services that credit card companies repeatedly try to sell (via annoying telephone calls) effective at all?

does anyone have any experience where these services have actually helped? i don’t have them but wonder if they would work. they usually cost at least $7 a month, which adds up to a lot of money.
