1) NYC Library @ 42nd Street/Bryant Park (behind library)
2) Grand Central Station
3) Rockafeller Center
4) Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (and back, if so desired)
5) Walk down 5th ave to Central Park
6) The Metropolitan Museum of Art (allot at least 1 day, if not 2 or more for this)
7) Ellis Island (get there early, the lines form quick)
8) Go to a Broadway Show, then go to St. Andrews for a scotch flight.*
9) Eat at Junior’s in Brooklyn (the original one on Atlantic Avenue, i believe)
10) Go to the Stand Bookstore at Broadway and 12th. 80miles of used books. amazing.

*times square is pretty obvious a tourist thing. you’ll get a taste of it if you do a broadway show.

I’m not into the touristy stuff, but we go there a lot to eat. Some of our favorite places include John’s Pizzeria, Stout, and Bubba Gump for the chocolate chip cookie sundae.. it’s out of this world. Also, my favorite non-gay bar is Dempsey’s.

If you venture off Manhattan, go to the Bronx and see a Yankee game, have lobster at City Island, go to the Bronx Zoo and The Bronx Botanical Gardens.

If you’re up early at Rockefeller Center, stand outside where they tape “The Today Show” and wave to your relatives on TV.

Check out Radio City Music Hall and see the Rockettes. You might want to go into St. Patrick’s Cathedral. And DO take a Horse and Buggy ride around Central Park. Then eat at Tavern on the Green.

We have Chinatown, around the corner from Little Italy. Then go to the Southstreet Seaport.

Fun restaurants include “Jeckyl and Hyde” and the “Russian Tea Room”.

ohhh and the best Chinese I’ve ever had is at 16th st & Irving… it’s called the Cottage. [drools]

adreamofautumn's avatar

Oh also…visit St. Marks in general if you’re heading to Pomme Frite. Food-wise I also really really recommend Zen Palate.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@adreamofautumn also, if you go St. Mark’s Place….go to Veselka, on 2nd and 9th. awesome slavic (ukrainian) food.

the best BEST Chinese food is in Flushing, Queens inside a mall where half of the stores are food and you can’t read the signs you just point the what you want if you can’t read the signs since they are all in Chinese. The most authentic food you will ever have.

It would help to know what time of the year your going and if you have been here before though, since I like to suggest activities that might be able to do in the springtime but not really appropriate for right now.

@eponymoushipster: Haha, I was at Veselka for breakfast.

My Top Ten:

1. Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Plaza – the best NYC view, hands down. The Empire State building can suck it.
2. Museum of Modern Art – an absolutely stunning collection.
3. Union Square Greenmarket/Street Vendors – from organic produce to Obama-apparel
4. Museum of Sex – hilarious, uncomfortable, and amazing, all wrapped into one.
5. Central Park – spend a day getting lost.
6. One or more of the following: the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney, the Frick, the International Center for Photography, the Cloisters – pick your favorite kind of art and go hogwild.
7. See a show, on or off Broadway.
8. Stroll around Greenwich Village, SoHo, Little Italy and Chinatown/Canal Street.
9. Ride the subway to Brighton Beach/Coney Island, especially during the off season.
10. Eat a Two Brother’s 1.00 pizza slice on St. Marks and get lamb and chicken with white and hot sauce from a Rafiqi’s cart.

@TitsMcGhee i love that place. there’s stuff there that’s not on the menu that’s more traditional; you have to know to ask for it. The mushroom barley soup with that poppyseed bread is the biz. I used to eat at the Ukrainian restaurant next door, too (not the bar), but last i was there, it had closed. :(

Also, i definitely agree with you on the Top Of The Rock. waayyy nicer than Empire State!

@blondie it at the end of april

he wants to see murals in harlem and the bronx, know the locations of any good ones?

TitsMcGhee's avatar

@eponymoushipster: I love their grilled cheese :) and they make a meeeeeean burger. The traditional stuff is, of course, great too. I love the borscht-themed holiday decorations the most, haha.

@A_Beaverhausen: Some good ones murals:

103 st between 3rd ave and Lex
106 st between 3rd ave and Lex
109 st between 3rd ave and Lex
(all in Harlem)
These are all Hispanic themed, and GORGEOUS.

@TitsMcGhee never had the american fare. that’s my background, so i get the traditional stuff, though i have heard the mac n cheese is none-too-shabby.

A_Beaverhausen's avatar

@adreamofautumn Ive seen wicked, AND ITS AWESOME!

TitsMcGhee's avatar

@eponymoushipster: The mac and cheese is pretty decent, but pales in comparison to S’MAC!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@TitsMcGhee i’m moving back to Philadelphia in 2 weeks, and they just opened a restaurant called Swallow in the Northern Liberties section of the city. only mac n’ cheese. it is probably one of the first places i’ll try upon return.

it sounds very much like S’MAC, which rocks.

which makes me wonder: how is Peanut Butter and Co. on Sullivan Street dealing with the current pb backlash? obviously, they aren’t affected by recalls, but in general, people are afraid of pb these days. another great comfort food genre restaurant in nyc, btw

TitsMcGhee's avatar

@eponymoushipster: Ooooh, haven’t been there, but I will def check it out!

eponymoushipster's avatar

@TitsMcGhee it’s pretty great. all kinds of pb to buy (flavors, etc) and you can also buy some for take home. right around the corner from Washington Square Park. Enjoy!

TitsMcGhee's avatar

@eponymoushipster: That’s soooo close to me :)

eponymoushipster's avatar

@TitsMcGhee do it up!, and let me know how you like it; and lurve for the morrissey quote in the bio.

I think @TitsMcGhee‘s and others’ lists covers most of mine, leaving me free to hit some painfully touristy stuff and some random stuff (in no particular order).

* Ride the subway, if you never have before. Mourn the fact that you can no longer use tokens. Be glad it runs at all hours, unlike so many other places.
* Go to a deli. I am partial to Carnegie even if it’s a tourist trap because they took my pastrami sandwich cherry. Go late at night. Katz’s is good too; the real New Yorkers here probably have their own recommendations.
* See the wooden escalators in Macy’s at Herald Square (may only appeal to geeks).
* I enjoyed the Circle Line tour. For someone that mostly went to New York on business, it was very interesting to see the topography of the upper end of Manhattan.
* Go down Battery Park and look at the Statue of Liberty.
* Go on a white knuckle ride with a crazy cab driver (this is hard to arrange in advance).
* Consider going to a comedy club. My girlfriend and another friend surprised me with tickets to Caroline’s for the late show one night. It was expensive ($40 cover plus two (expensive) drink minimum but so funny. There are probably cheaper venues.
* Walk around at night. Be amazed at all the trash the city generates, and understand how being in the trash business can be so lucrative. If you’re down by NYU, feel amazingly old and wish you’d had more fun in college (also may not apply, heh).

Must stop now as I am starting to get a little green with envy. Have a great trip.

How DARE I forget? You’ve GOT to go to “Ground Zero”, where the World Trade Center used to be.

Speaking of comedy, there is a place called the Comedy Cellar in the village. You will fall off your chair laughing, I guarantee it!!!
