How do i transfer albums from my backup drive to itunes on my new PC?

Asked by BradBourbon (2points) February 24th, 2009

OK then. My PC started to show signs of age, so i bought an external back up drive and copied everything to it. I have now copied my itunes albums from the back up into my itunes folder on my new PC. They are sitting in the same folder as the pre loaded windows stuff that Itunes has picked up. But my albums do not show on itunes. please help.

Before you move anything, you need to consolidate the library (File-Library-Consolidate Library).

THEN you need to move your iTunes folder to the other drive, including the iTunes Library.itl and .xml files.

THEN go to your options menu, and repoint your iTunes to look at the new folder (i.e. Where is your iTunes folder located).

Then it should start to import the songs back into iTunes.

i just did this on Sunday. let me know if you have more questions

My music on my back up drive is a little messy and in various places but i have copied and paste the tracks in the itunes library into My Music on the new PC. Do ineed to find the itunes folder on the back up drive.

If your music is a little messy, then definitely the first thing you need to do is run the Consolidate feature. it will move EVERYTHING into the iTunes music folder.

You do not want to manually move anything to My Music. iTunes doesn’t have any way of knowing where the files are now.

go back, and follow the steps in my first comment.

I am a bit past that as my old pc is defunked. I have now imported all folders that contained music and they all seem to be there. I am now wondering where the actual files are..will itunes actually be going to my back up drive to get the file. Will consolidation at this point then transfer all the files to my new pc drive.

Well, if the old PC is gonzo, what you may have to do is import the files back into iTunes anew, that is to say, you may have to do an “Add to Library” (via the File menu) for the files and create a new iTunes structure, THEN do a consolidate.

Thanks for your help, i ended up adding the folders that contained music on my back up drive and then consolidating. I have a bit of work to do with some duplicates but all seems ok.
