What are the odds....freaky chance events?

Asked by Angel_D (51points) March 12th, 2009

Have you ever had a really weird chance event happen? For example, I drew my husband’s name out of a draw with approximately 1200 people in it. He would have won $500 but had to be there with me. He usually would have been but that day he wasn’t. Have you ever had a similar situation where the odds are slim but you think God has a sense of humour and likes to get his chuckles too?

The odds are indeed small. But you should realize that with so many people on Earth, and with so much time that goes on, improbable events such as this become increasingly probable!

Because I understand the mathematics behind such “random” events, as with other things, I do not consider it as God having a chuckle as I don’t believe a god exists.

Yes! In the early 70’s when crock pots were first becoming popular, I decided to get one for my Mom for Mother’s Day. My friend and I went shopping for it, and ran into my Mom shopping for a bridal shower gift. I was able to conceal her gift by having my friend stand between my Mom and the cart.. whew!!

Later that day, I wrapped it in a very nice lavander paper with a big purple bow. Just as I finished it, my Mom knocked on my door, so I hid it quickly, then opened the door to see what she wanted.

She asked me if I would wrap the shower gift she bought while she got dressed. My friend and I just about fainted when she handed me the gift. It was a crock pot, and the wrapping paper was exactly the same as what I used for hers!!

My Mom thought we were nuts, and had no idea why we laughed so hard when we saw the gift she bought. I just told her something like we were laughing because the paper was hideous.

While my Mom was getting ready, I wrapped the gift exactly as I had hers, then set the two of them side by side on the kitchen table. When she came into the room, I simply said: “Take your pick”! She looked dumbfounded, and then I explained that we were both buying the same thing, at the same store, at the same time!!
