What do you think about the board game called the Settlers of Catan?

Asked by mattbrowne (31732points) March 26th, 2009

Settlers of Catan is a multiplayer board game, which is the first German-style board game to achieve popularity outside Europe, and has been called the “killer app” of designer board games. Over 11 million games in the Catan series have been sold, and the game has been translated into twenty-five languages from the original German. The game has rapidly become popular in part because its mechanics are relatively simple, while its dynamics are quite complex.

I love it! Steep learning curve, then it’s non stop fun!

I love it! It’s really, really fun and a great way to meet people.

Fun game. Easy to learn; but it’s never the same game twice and there’s some interesting strategy to it.

Great game, love the expansions too. Just remember when you are trading, “I have a… and I want a…”

I love it and have spread it like a weed to my friends. It’s just so fun and well balanced.

Also, I’ve now just discovered Ticket to Ride, which I would also recommend as new brilliant designer game.

@ben: Oh, I love, love, love Ticket to Ride. It’s so fun. Plus it is easier to get going with if you have, um, rule averse friends? (If it takes a book to explain the rules, they really don’t want to play.)

Ticket to Ride is great also…and we also like Carcassonne, thanks to dynamicduo.

Ticket to Ride is a great game especially because it’s so easy to learn. I’ve gotten many people who don’t otherwise play boardgames beyond Monopoly to try Ticket to Ride.

Cool. I’ve not heard of it, I’ll look for it.

@Benny
I assume you mean you never heard of Ticket to Ride?

There are several versions- all are fun. Think Empire Builder for second graders :>) No crayons needed.

Benny's avatar

@crisw Ticket to Ride? No, I haven’t heard of it. I also haven’t heard of Empire Builder. You say Ticket to Ride is for second graders? Is it still out? I’m looking for new games for my daughter—ones that aren’t quite as annoying as the ones she likes to play.

@Benny

I think a smart second grader could play Ticket to Ride. Here’s a description from the makers of the game. I’d start with the U.S. version, which is less complicated than some of the others.

Has anyone tried any of the extensions?

crisw's avatar

@mattbrowne

We haven’t tried the extensions to the existing games, but we have the Europe version (the rules are a bit more complex than the US one) and we have played Nordic Countries. I like the Europe one best.

mattbrowne's avatar

@crisw – Interesting. I wasn’t aware the rules were simpler for the US version. Can you give an example?

crisw's avatar

@mattbrowne

What I meant (in case it’s confusing) is that the European map version has additions (like stations) that aren’t used in the US map version.

Pretty great game, but I frequently play it too many times in a row and get burned out. It also leads to some pretty hilarious trading situations. . .
Wood for sheep? Anyone?

mattbrowne's avatar

@Baloo72 – I’ll give you one wood for two sheep. Deal?
