What are the most common reasons for water retention?

Asked by nebule (16452points) March 31st, 2009

I’m retaining water, I’m due on my period, I’m drinking plenty of water too… and I woke up this morning and my eyes were really puffy underneath…I’ve also put weight on…like three pounds in 4 days..despite eating healthier than I have in months….

Here’s a website that explains the causes of water retention. I feel feel the same way when i’m on my period. Maybe you can ask your doctor if it’s okay for you to take water pills? You can get them over-the-counter, but they can also be prescribed to you. Maybe your doctor can also suggest some other methods of reducing water retention.

edit – here’s a better website from the mayo clinic

I wonder what your salt intake is… believe it or not this can have a pretty big impact on water retention.

@NaturalMineralWater I’m a bit slow this morning…but I don’t get it..:-/

@allen_o lol…(no smarties here!)

@Dr_C My salt intake should be pretty ok tbh… but will check it out… what’s the recommended amounts for a 28 year old woman? do you know?

@KrystaElyse I have ahd a water infection four weeks and the doctors still haven’t sorted this out…awaiting more test results… so could be something to do with my kidney function perhaps….? Hmm thanks for the links very useful x

I always retain water before my period, and gain about 3–5lbs out of nowhere.

I would think being due on your period would solve it.

What’s a water infection?

nebule's avatar

no…I’m not due on my period sorry…why did i so clearly get that wrong…
When I was writing it I was thinking I better tell them I’m not due on my period lol! maybe it all got a bit crosswired in my brain!

water infection = urine infection

Have you tried Evening Primrose Oil (GLA) for the period-helps hormonal balance. I too don’t know what a water infection is. Sound like you are drinking plenty of water, so it can’t be that. You don’t have a UTI do you?
