Do kids need passports or passport cards?

At the end of June we are planning a family vacation to Glacier National Park. My sons, ages 9 and 13, will be along and we would like to go into Canada. My hubby and I have passports but what about my sons? Do they need passports/cards? I’ve heard they can just use certified copies of their birth certificates?
