If you are in the United States you can’t do it without jailbraking your phone. AT&T is taking some time to allow it here. And it will cost extra.

@johnpowell – yes you can…i have it..there are ways ;) i just dont kno if i will be charged on my bill.im in US, have AT&T and have tethering enabled right now…but have yet to use it because of a fear that my bill will be insanely high

@futurelaker88… I saw that hack. I just wasn’t comfortable suggesting it.

@johnpowell – lol yea but i wasnt asking how to get it, i was asking if i use it, is the unlimited data i have the same as tethering, or is it some insane price to use it?

I am a simyo.es-user with a free and un-jailbroken iPhone and I had have to download a small programm from the simyo-site to have tehering within the system preferences of the phone. I pay the usual rate avcessing via 3G the internet.

Sorry.. I’m having a hard time parsing questions today. I don’t know the answer.

But I really doubt AT&T can tell. I guess they could look at browser agent string. In Safari it takes two seconds to make it look like you are on a iPhone.

But I really doubt they wasted time having people write a solution to such a small problem.

@ml3269 – does that mean you tether with your iphone and pay nothing for it?

In the UK you have to pay £15 a month to use tethering officially. It’s probably not unreasonable to guess that when it comes to AT&T they will charge for the privilege.

futurelaker88's avatar

@Lightlyseared – but im saying how will they know im tethering and not just using my iphone browser/youtube/email?

Lightlyseared's avatar

No idea but I would assume it is possible to work out if you really wanted. Whether they actually bother may depend on how much you use it.

@futurelaker88 :: This took me 5 minutes.

A lot of info is stored that you might not know about.

@johnpowell – i have no idea what that means. lol. sorry :/

The rumor was that they would charge $55 a month for tethering, but AT&T has said that it won’t cost that much. They haven’t set a price yet though. But yes, it will of course be an extra charge. For a company crappy enough to charge you what they do for text messaging and data plans, yes they will definitely charge for tethering.

@futurelaker88 :: It means that it is super simple for them to detect your browser. If you are using IE, Firefox, Operha, or Safari they can know. Unless you change your User Agent string.
