Can a DNA test reveal when you last smoked hash?

I heard this story a few years back when I was in Germany. There was this famous football player who was accused of having used drugs in the past (I think it was hash only, but it could have been something harder). He insisted he hadn’t, and agreed to take a DNA test, using hair. It turned out he was lying, and from what I remember it can go up to 3 years back.

My memory is hazy on this, so the question is: can a DNA test tell for sure whether you’ve smoked hash in the past? And how far back can it go? Is it related to how often the person smoked? eg if one is a regular user and stops for 3 years will it come out completely clean?
