Dish… I’ve had both and Dish seems to have more movie channels that you can get without having to buy them as a package.

Boots is right that Dish offers more movie channels, but I’ve compared prices/channel selection, and I’ve found that DirecTV seems to offer more channels for a comparable price. Tech support has always been good too. That being said, DirecTV doesn’t have the ridiculous startup rates, like Dish’s $10 a month for 6 months promo.

I’ve had both and preferred the cable since dish got all whacked in the weather. Now I say, had because for two years now I’ve gone without any paid cable in order to work my internet for all it’s monthly fee’s worth by watching youtube.com and hulu.com for TV and movies. Also, with the minimum netflix membership, it lets me watch movies online at no extra charge.

I too choose Dish. I had DirecTV for about 4 or 5 years and found that Dish offered me more channels for less money. I re-evaluated when I went to an HDTV and STILL found that Dish has better rates. DirecTV does offer more sports programming, but if price is your best consideration, Dish is the way to go. And I wouldn’t personally even consider going back to cable anymore, basically the weather rarely affects my Dish, maybe 2 or 3 times a year, whereas I had cable outages frequently last time I had cable….though I still have cable internet and that rarely goes out, so perhaps cable has gotten its act together. But, and this is where it gets tricky because prices can vary so much from market to market, but where I live, again I’d get fewer channels at a higher cost by switching to cable, the only way I could cut those rates would be if I subscribed to cable TV, cable internet AND cable phone, so for me the consideration comes down to, I don’t want cable phone because I pay $15 a month for Vonage and don’t want to pay $30+ a month for the same thing, and since what I’d get with bundled cable, and I don’t want to swtich over to cable TV as it would cost more and I’d get less.
