No they wasn’t invented in Scotland , things get the name from who ever names them . He maybe was thinking about Scotland at the time , why people name things the way they do is a mystery . ” Contrary to popular belief (and despite being the butt of a number of English comedians’ jokes about the Scottish diet), Scotch Eggs were actually invented by the famous London department store, Fortnum & Mason in 1851. ”

Can any British Flutherer weigh in on the term scotch meat, which one source (just a poster in a forum) says is the reason for the name? The sausage mixture was made form “scotch meat”. Is that leftover meat?

As to the more general nature of question, it depends. Sandwiches as you probably know are named after their inventor, the Earl of Sandwich. You might enjoy this site, which is all about food name origins.

@sandystrachan Please give the attribution for the quotes. Yours is from the Wikipedia entry on Scotch Eggs.
