Were these carrots bad?

Asked by imyourbffjess (54points) August 25th, 2009

My mother JUST Got these carrots the other day, but one of them had Brown on it, just a tad. I ate some carrots, and automatically my stomach felt crampy, I do have anxiety; or fear problems, and this might be why the stomach was hurting, do you think that the carrots went bad?

They might have been a little rotten, but you can generally eat ‘slightly too far gone’ fruit and veg without coming to harm; especially if they were cooked, then the majority of bacteria potentially growing on them would have been killed, and you would probably have to eat quite a significant amount in order to become ill. In fact, many people use old fruit and veg to create fruit juice as the only thing fundamentally wrong with old fruit/veg is the bacteria that could be growing on them, but, for example, over-ripe, squishy or brown fruit can still be used. Just don’t eat it if it’s really furry, and you should be fine. :)

@macca no they were not cooked. Haha, thanks though!

@imyourbffjess: The real giveaway with raw carrots is when they are rubbery enough to tie in a knot. You can use a peeler to remove any random nasty spots if the rest of the carrot looks fine.

@gailcalled: Thanks, I really enjoyed that answer, thanks again! I’m giving you a ‘Great Answer’ and of course you to @macca!

It’s unlikely to get serious food poisoning from unprocessed carrots with tiny spots. Your stomach cramps are most likely caused by anxiety. The probability that your body is in fact fine is 99.99%. Hope this helps.
