What are some of the better/best websites to job search?

Asked by FrankHebusSmith (4319points) September 13th, 2009

Long story short; I’m fresh out of college (graduated in June), I had gotten a job with one of the largest food manufacturers in the world doing basic lab work for a research facility of theirs (I’m a chemist). Well it was through a contractor, and for whatever reason they decided they didn’t want me working there anymore, and ended my contract 2 weeks ago.

I’m back at the grind of looking for a job, but remembering what a pain it was last time (I’d been searching since February for one, and I didn’t have that job til early July), I’m really trying to avoid the same mess this time.

I know monster, and I know to not really apply through monster, but find jobs and then go to those companies sites. I know career builder.

Any other suggestions?

Have you looked at LinkedIn ? It’s a pretty serious place for networking.

Why not apply through monster?

LinkedIn is good. join their industry associations. Look in trade publications; they often list jobs in the back. Washington Post has a good online employment.

@corey D Because as I found in my initial job search, often when you apply via monster, the employer just somehow doesn’t get your application. For a while I was applying only through monster, and one day I decided to apply to a job through the companies own website. Later in an initial interview or an e-mail or something I mentioned to the HR person that I had been trying to get a job with the company for months (multiple positions) and she told me often times they don’t get apps submitted via monster. I’ve also heard many employers don’t like to use monster because it costs money, whereas sites like careerbuilder are free.

Linkedin is great if you’ve already got an established professional network. Personally I used craigslist to find all of my jobs, living arrangements, and current internship. Check that out for sure.
