What to do and where to stay in New Orleans on a budget?

Asked by curiousk (128points) October 16th, 2009

I am looking to travel with several friends to New Orleans for the week/weekend of Martin Luther King Jr. Looking for flights and hotels seems a little overwhelming because I’ve never been there. We are on a bit of a budget, so does anyone have any ideas and reccomendations on what to do and where to stay (hostels/inns/hotels). We want to experience great food, awesome Jazz/Blues, visit fun places/Landmarks and attend other kool events. We are looking to stay there between 5–8 days. Please be specific please. Thanks!

I’ve had really good luck with some of the discount travel sites. On our honeymoon we stayed in a 4-star hotel for less than 100 a night.

The rooms are cheaper right outside the Quarter on Canal. Staying inside the Quarter in a decent place can be expensive. We always stay at the end of Canal Street. It is close enough to walk to the Quarter and Bourbon Street. As with any big city and especially NOLA, you must be very careful walking around at night. You don’t want to stay far from the Quarter, because walking is not safe. The French Quarter is usually a safe area to play. There is Snugg Harbor for great jazz , and the street musicians and artists. I’m going for a this weekend. I can’t wait!
