How do I heal my over-worked knees for my yoga session tomorrow?

Asked by Facade (22937points) October 23rd, 2009

So I went to yoga about 3 hours ago, and now my knees hurt when I walk typical. I want to go again in the morning so how do I make it so I’m ready to go by then?

Just take it easy tomorrow and let your instructor know that you’re having difficulty in that area. If you’re knees are hurting, maybe something a little less rigorous than hot yoga might be helpful.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic I wrote it [joint issues] on my form thingy today, and she did make sure to explain modified poses such a nice lady. It just didn’t hurt while I was doing it, so that’s how it happened :( Also, I’m on a one week trial and would like to go every day to get my money’s worth.

A good yoga instructor, upon you telling them “well, my knees ache from last time” will tell you how to modify the positions as the class goes along to be knee-friendly, or give you alternates if the position is untennable-with-a-bad-knee.

A great yoga teacher will also give you knee-fixing homework positions to try.

When I was in a car accident a few years ago I broke my rib. I kept doing yoga, having told my instructor what happened and what was broken, and I credit his alternate-position-instruction and insistence that I still do yoga, but mindful of the rib, with a whole lot of subsequent healing.

A non-yoga solution: alternate ice and heat in half-hour intervals on and around the sore area.

(IE, bag of ice cubes followed by a hot towel, then back to ‘cubes)

Would it beneficial tomorrow? I need to go to bed soon.

i’d put a hot towel on it for half an hour and then sleep.

@Facade ; If your instructor is any good at all they will give you wok tomorrow that will help your knees to heal faster once you tell her hat you’re going through tonight. Don’t skip it because your knees are hurting. My hubby has a knee replacement and he can still do yoga.

@Judi I’m not going to skip it. It’s too good to skip :) I want to take @aphilotus advice, but going down the stairs again is not happening tonight.

Put a pillow under them and sweet dreams!

S, @Facade, follow-up: What happened? How’s the knee?

Well I went again the next day. Didn’t take it easy. It hurt again. I just took a tylenol last night. I’m really just hoping it go away. Also pulled my back muscles I think resting today will help.
