How far ahead should I book my plane ticket?

Asked by absolutely (126points) February 15th, 2008

I’m planning on traveling one way around April 30. Will it be cheaper to buy the ticket now or closer to the date?

The earlier you buy it the cheaper it is (I’m pretty sure that’s how it works)

Check out Farecast.com

They have Fare Prediction feature that can tell you if the lowest fare for a trip is rising or dropping over the next 7 days. This will help you determine if the price of ticket your looking to book is going to up or drop. This is based on fare data that they have compiled and analyzed the trends.

Good Luck!

Another vote for Farecast as a predictor for trends. Often I find that, contrary to what jonno says, flight prices can come way down between three months and one month away. It’s worth noting that you can pay Farecast a small fee (I think $10) to lock in the current price, though I’ve never done that.

The only exception to this seems to be Southwest, whose tickets (as fare as I can see), don’t get cheaper over time, so there’s no advantage to waiting.
