Why do we call a sofa a couch?

Asked by raylrodr (208points) December 17th, 2009

Why has a sofa or couch also become to be known as a Davenport? We have used this terminology all our lives and don’t know the origin.

I read that the AH Davenport company was a big sofa/furniture manufacturer Ray. It’s kind of like Kleenex, all tissues aren’t Kleenex, but we just started calling them that. It’s just what you grow up with I guess.
