What does the icon "EVDO" mean?

I have an LG phone. Just a simple cell phone. I’m not connected to the internet, though it is capable. Yesterday this little orange square popped up on my screen and won’t go away. When I looked up the icon it said “EVDO”. What is this? What does it mean?
