Does anybody have any stories about time capsule projects?

Asked by ChocolateReigns (5624points) January 16th, 2010

Last night, my dad showed us this little hole thing in our house. I didn’t know about it – exciting! I thought I knew this house inside out, living here my whole life! Anyways, my sister and I got this idea – put a time capsule in there and open it in 2020 or 2025! We’re going to all (my parents, my brother, me and my little sister) write a letter to our future selves and collaborate on a letter to the “next generation” and then some stuff from our house before we remodeled, and some pictures of the “modern” technology. This is going to be so epic! By the time we open it, we kids will all be married and probably have kids. This will give my sister and my husbands and children a look into our childhood, and it will be great reminiscing for us kids! I’m quite excited about it. Has anybody done this and have stories that you would care to share? What did you put in?

we’ve lived in this house for 30 years, and I have a place where I periodically drop family pictures, notes, baseball cards, our electric bill, things that we’ve found from other residents when we remodelled. The only way anyone will find it is if they remove a wall some day.

I found all kinds of things from past residents in our attic, under the floor. Advertisements, pictures, party invitations, etc.

Well, on New Year’s Eve 2007/8 all my family (there was 14 of us) and a couple of friends made wishes for one another for the forthcoming year…. we opened them on New Years Eve 2008/9, it was lovely…some had even come true.

It’s not a time capsule as such but I write in diaries for my 3 year old son Theo… He’ll have them when he turns 18 or…when I see fit… but I don’t think it will be before then. I have also written diaries all my life since I was 10 so I have an on going time capsule there… I would like to write a letter to my older self though too for say in 10 years and 20 years time… that would be cool and probably quite cathartic!

This rental house that I lived in for four years had concrete pillars on the front porch. The previous tenant got pissed and had tied one up to a pick up, and yanked it off! It left a hole in the concrete porch. When my landlord finally said he was going to repair it, the kids and I rounded up some stuff pertaining to ourselves and the 90’s, and and we put it in a plastic baggie and dropped it in the hole before the pillar went back over it!

My aunts and uncles and cousins and grandparents and parents and sister all got together and made a time capsule a few years ago. Everyone contributed something. (I can’t remember what most people, including myself, put in.) I dug an enormous hole in the back of my yard. At a 4th of July barbecue everyone came over and we wrapped everything in plastic and put the plastic wrapped things in plastic bags, and put everything in a cooler. Then we wrapped the cooler in plastic and placed buried it in the hole.

We also bought four bottles of wine. We opened two and everyone tasted it, and the other two we sealed in a length of PVC pipe and buried next to the time capsule. I don’t have much hope for those, even though they’re definitely buried below the frost line.

Its only a seven year thing, so we’re supposed to open it in 2013. I kind of wish we had decided for it to be longer, but, of course we can always make another.
