How can I easily and efficiently organize my Itunes library?

Asked by TexasDude (25274points) January 20th, 2010

Upon installing Itunes on my new laptop, I allowed it to search for and add music files to my library, as I had just copied my music from my old laptop over to this one via an external hard drive. After locating and adding the files, it showed that it had added over 1000 Windows sound effects to my library and every actual song was duplicated. What is the best way to remedy this and regain a neat, organized catalogue of music only, no Windows sound effects?

Lawl,
Uhm…Delete everything uploaded, so theres nothing on it. Get all the songs you want in a folder on your computer, then add them all to iTunes. Thats how I do it, and whenever i download a new song i get it sent to the folder with all my songs and just drag it into iTunes.

Delete the itunes library file (which is probably in the My Music folder) then start over. Do what @RAWRxRandy says and put all your ,music in one folder (which it probably is already) and then when you restart itunes go to “add folder to library” and just add that folder.

to keep it streamlined in future you can also do the duplicate search, i’m always surprised how often i end up with them (buying the single as download, then the album, best of compilations etc etc)

in fact the only trick i think iTunes is missing is the ability to keep one track and attribute it to all the albums its on… you only have one track but it comes up in the correct running order in the single package, the album, the best of, the compilation album, the soundtrack etc… and anyone who doesn’t believe one song could be in all these places clearly doesn’t own much Joy Division

thats what i want next Apple ok? bring out the tablet then fix that up for me, ta!

This is what I did when I got a new computer.

I selected all of my music in iTunes and dragged it to a new folder on my external hard drive. Then I went into the empty iTunes on my new computer and went to edit>preferences>advanced tab. Once in that tab, I made sure that the iTunes media location was C:\Users\Owner\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music. Then I checked the two boxes underneath that box. Click OK, and drag in the whole folder from the external hard drive. It will take a little while for your music to import, but everything will be sorted nicely and in individual folders.
