My Wii is making grinding noises?

Asked by ShiningToast (2108points) January 21st, 2010

Everytime my Wii reads/spins a disk it does so very roughly. It sounds like it is grinding against something lightly. I suspect the disk is wobbling when it spins. It has trouble reading Mario Kart Wii because of it. It will play for a minute, then get the black disk error screen.

Does anyone know if this is a common problem? Any fixes? I’m not going to buy a new Wii if this one is toast. For reference, I bought my Wii July/August 2007.

Did you try playing Super Smash Bros.? It could be a ” dirty laser ” issue.

@buckyboy28 I haven’t yet. I will now.

I’ve heard that it is a fairly common problem, and there are several solutions, many of which are bad. I’d recommend trying a gamecube game, and if that will work, than there may be an issue with the “springs” that are designed to “catch” the wii game. If it will not work either, it may be a drive issue, which can be replaced with Nintendo for around $70.

I miss the 80’s when the solution was always “just blow on it”

@LethalCupcake If your xbox is making loud grinding sounds, you may want to get it checked, lol.
