Can you help me with my windshield wiper question?

Asked by starrkate83 (9points) June 3rd, 2010

I drive a 1995 ford mustang. My windshield wipers seem to only work when the turn signals are on or when my brights are on. Other than that it only works on the two fastest speeds when they are on without brights or the turn signals. It didnt pass safety so I need to know what I need to do to have it fixed. Would it be the switch, the motor, or something else?

There seems to be a short in the switch in the steering column. Do you have “tilt-wheel”? It’s a more common problem on cars with tilt-wheel. If you’re even a little mechanically inclined it’s a fairly straight forward repair, otherwise take it to a reputable automotive electrical shop or the dealership.

Sure seems reasonable that @prescottman2008 answered your question. But, found this site that might help also.

Remember you are working with a steering with a loaded SRS airbag.

It is a tilt wheel. So I dont need to buy a new turn signal knob?

Yes, you need the Turn Signal/Wiper Switch assembly, it’s an all-in-one unit. The part costs about $40. The labor guide says a repair shop should charge no more than 0.7hrs of labor.
