Is being in the middle a bad thing in your mind (read more)?

So often it’s apparent to me that many people believe that having a middle-of-the-road stance is a negative thing, often with “conservative vs. liberal”. “Pick a side” they say, “make up your mind.” The same goes for being bisexual even. “You can’t have both”, they’re told.

To me, this is just ignorant. To me this is just a desire of people who see the world in white and black, absolute right and absolute wrong, good and evil, yes and no, 1 and 0.

I don’t see people who have a “middle ground” stance as being “weak” or “indecisive”. Many times the answer is the best of both sides. Sure, in many cases, maybe it is because they are just indecisive and can’t make up their mind, but since when is that a bad thing? Not everything has a clear-cut answer. It’s not easy to latch onto one “side” if that side has serious flaws.

Being a moderate or a “centrist”, I’ve heard much of this before. I’ve even been accused of being “apathetic”, something I am not at all, and which is a fundamentally different from being “moderate” in my mind.

What do you think of this? When is it better to just “pick a side”? Do you see being in the middle as a weak and indecisive position?
