Do you have frequent, awkward situations, too?

Asked by Axarraekji (247points) June 9th, 2010

I seem to have these frequent awkward situations in which I cannot really redeem myself or explain what I am doing.

E.g. # 1 – I was at Target looking at car stereo replacements. I was reading the descriptions on each box to see how it worked with iPods. Each box had a security device on it because it was expensive. A security guard walked right to me and asked me if he could help me with anything. I knew he was there because I was browsing these expensive items, but I played along and told him what I was up to. I was only there for about four minutes, but I suppose it looked suspicious that I was looking closely at the boxes, but that was just because I was trying to determine the features.

E.g. #2 – I signed in at my chiropractor’s office and I started analyzing other people’s signatures (I knew the doc was busy so I had a minute or two) that were on the sheet. The name above me was the same as mine, that is what caught my attention. The massage therapist, who I did not see, was apparently watching me and said that the doc would be with me in a minute. I knew she was wondering what the hec I was doing staring at the sign-in sheet.

Do these things happen as frequently as they do to me?

I think you’re reading too much into stuff, and normal situations seem awkward because you’re putting a lot of emphasis on what other people think.

The security guy was probably asking for real. Maybe he could remove the security device and wanted to know if you needed help. Looking closely at boxes means you’re seriously considering a purchase. Why would someone think it was weird to closely examine an expensive purchase?

I used to think awkward things happened to me all the damn time but then I realized no one is paying half as much attention to what I’m doing as I am.

@Likeradar I agree. I just thought it’d be fun to post this question, but I do not take these things too seriously (:
In reality, they’re not too awkward

I wouldn’t find either situation awkward. Maybe you are a little too sensitive.

It sounds like you’re just like most people- we get lost in our own little world sometimes.

My awkward moments are more like when someone notices my finger-gripping movements or other stim that I thought was fairly unobtrusive. Or, when I make what to me is a funny joke- but it turns out I said it at the worst possible time.
