How do you make a wikipedia page?

Asked by ninahenry (1958 points ) July 21st, 2010

Has anyone ever made a wikipedia page? How did you go about it? I’m looking to create a wikipedia page for a person for the purpose of social + search marketing. I don’t physically know which buttons to click to make the page but have found some advice online as to what to put on it, but does anyone know how to physically create the page? If anyone has any advice as what/what not to put on it too that would be welcomed :)

I also found an article that sounded interesting but you have to create an account to read articles on the website. There’s a 7 day free trial but you have to enter your bank card details regardless. Is it possible to bypass this and read it without having to enter my card details online? Here are the links for it:

The first step to learning to use Wikipedia might be to use Wikipedia to learn how to use Wikipedia.

Try checking this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Starting_an_article

The first step would be to make account. Then, “In the search box near the top right of a page, type the title of the new article, then click Go. If the Search page reports “You may create the page” followed by the article name in red, then you can click the red article name to start editing the article.”

Hope that helps :)

It seems to be quite a bit tricker to do when the page is about a person :/

@ninahenry Really? How so?

I would make sure the person is relevant. I tried to create a page for a friend of mine who is a semi pro golfer and the page was rejected.

Yeah it says things how it has to be something that would be in an actual encyclopedia. She is already mentioned on Wikipedia though on someone else’s page, so I dunno if that’d make any difference or if I could make it into a link somehow… hmmm… She’s a professional singer and has worked with a lot of artists but if they rejected a semi pro golfer she’d probably fall under the same critiria :/ oh dear.

It is probably worth a shot but don’t put too much time into it until you know they are going to accept it. Otherwise just focus your efforts on twitter and facebook. You might even post a question about that person here on fluther.
