Think it is true that no good deed goes unpunished?

There is a saying that “no good deed goes unpunished”? I take that to mean if you help someone get to the gas station with his gas can because he ran out of gas somewhere down the line a bird poops on you, if you give money to a woman short on grocery money at the supermarket you run over a nail and get a flat tire. Has situations like that ever happened to you that you got bit in the a** while trying to do a good deed or shortly after? If so, do you believe in the saying and has it effected how or if you’d do another good deed any time soon?
