What the heck is buffetting?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) August 31st, 2010

This is a new word for me. I thought after i had listened to all the music of Jimmy Buffett, that maybe this was buffetting. I noticed this word in a magazine for a new type of fan, that prevents buffetting. Question: what the heck is buffetting?

Is this because of the new Dyson fan?
A Buffet, in this sense (Not the singer, or the restaurant), is weird to describe. But it’s like a gust of wind hitting you.
The best way to exemplify buffeting is with this video put out by the Dyson team. The first portion of it shows the airflow of the typical fan, and how the air contacts your body. Then the second portion shows that their weird fan doesn’t do that.

We use the expression Buffeting wind!
It means to be blown by a strong wind on and off as if it were punching you.

- pounding: repeated heavy blows

- pounded or hit repeatedly by storms or adversities

- battered, especially by strong wind

- is a high-frequency instability, caused by airflow disconnection from the airfoil or shock wave oscillations. It is a random forced vibration.
