Does man have a "sin quota?"?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) September 14th, 2010

Humans on the planet are not sinless. This is why Eve was part of the picture, in the beginning. Many of us commit many more sins than others, which leads me to this question: Do each of us have a sin quota? Are we allowed so many sins, before the pin is pulled on our life? Are you sinless? Is anyone sinless?

If one doesn’t agree with sin as a concept and doesn’t buy into the whole Adam and Eve thing, then it doesn’t matter whether or not we have a sin quota because we’re sinless. I am sinless since I don’t believe in sin but I do believe in harmful actions and those I try to keep to a minimum – not because there is a quota, but because they’re wrong.

How does one define a sin? Personally, I think the whole idea of sin popped up in response to the morals of the time during which the concept was created.

For example, “lust” no longer has to be deadly, either literally or metaphorically. However, at the time that lust was declared a deadly sin, there was still a lot of importance placed on chastity and women had very little control over their own sexuality. Nowadays, I can lust after pretty much whomever I want and I won’t get stoned to death, nor will I get pregnant if I take proper precautions.

Like @Simone_De_Beauvoir, I am sinless because I do not believe that anything is inherently “sinful.”

I don’t think Adam/Eve sinned because they disobeyed God. I think they sinned because they lied to God afterward. Not only did they lie and hide, but they also played the first game of pass the blame.

Sin is not a physical corruption. Sin is a spiritually corruption. In that light, we have all, I believe, faced a spiritual corruption at one time or another.

And no, I don’t believe there is any limit put upon our ability to sin. For I don’t believe there is any limit on our ability to forgive.

Sin can be endless.. look at Hitler, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy.

I’m with the First two posters here, Thumbs up and Lurve and all that Jazz.

Don’t believe in Sin either….. there are good people, there are bad people. I mean some of the things some people have done go way above and beyond any kind of Quota there could be in just 1 hateful, hurtful and brutal act… how can you put a limit on something like that? Not possible, but again, not believing in Sin…eh…

There’s no quota per se. However, there are sanctions placed on humans and countries who do the wrong things. Humans get thrown in jail or fined or suffer some other punishment. Countries are embargoed and sometimes a war is initiated against them.

Humans generally do not tolerate much rule-breaking by other humans. So I would say that if we catch you, and we can prove you did it, your sin quota is used up and it’s off to prison for you.

No one has “sin”.

It is a human description, of an environmental behavior. That we use to judge others in order to keep them in line.

Yes, there is. Fortunately a cap and trade policy is being formulated.
