Why did Athrun and Cagalli break up in Gundam Seed Destiny?

They were together in the first series, Gundam Seed, but they mysteriously broke up in Gundam Seed Destiny. I’m not a fan of any pairing, but this plot device just made Gundam Seed Destiny even more confusing.

P.S. I am a UC Gundam fan. Gundam Z!

It was her ‘duty’ to remain at ORB, I think, and not any particular conflict internal to the relationship that resulted in the break-up. Their lives simply were not compatible due to circumstance. And narratively speaking, it would be inconvenient for the series’ writers to keep the relationship alive. Hence Meyrin.
