Is it true that listening to a song will aid in ridding it from your mind?

One of my younger brothers is currently fixated with an infamous YouTube “quartet” called The Gregory Brothers.

If you haven’t heard of them, they’ve basically created a channel that consists of splicing together snippets of news broadcasts and auto-tuning the voices of the reporters so that their conversations between one another can be (hilariously) formed into catchy tunes.

They call their project “Auto Tune The News” and I have heard these songs so many times that I’m fairly certain that they are driving me crazy! I mean, I have no problem at all with their songs. They are generally pretty entertaining and some of them are so well done that I’ve even taken the time to learn to lyrics so that I can sing along with my brother and have a grand old time.

However, some of the songs get stuck in my head for weeks at a time. They’re there when I wake up in the morning, all throughout the day when I’ve given up brooding about my daily life, and they’re there when I lay down to sleep at night.

So my question to all of you is: is it true that listening to the song that is stuck in your head will eventually help you stop thinking about it? So far I’m not sure that this method is working. How do you generally feel when you get a song stuck in your head? It’s getting to the point where I feel that banging my head against the nearest wall repeatedly is going to be my only form of relief from this non-stop terror.

P.S. I didn’t link to the site because I didn’t want anyone to think that I was advertising- and I don’t want to be blamed for getting their songs stuck in anyone’s head.
