Can someone explain the difference between 'general' and 'social'?

I’m off fluther for a while, come back, and there’s a new system! (ooh at least i think there is… now i can’t remember…)
I know what the site descriptions are, I just don’t get how to pick between the two, or how much of a difference the choice will make?
General is only serious answers? But social is anything? Does it matter?
And I could spend some time wandering around the site figuring this out but I thought I might as well ask, since it is fluther…
(and since for this question I I can choose Meta and not have to worry!)
