How come the band At the Drive-In broke up?

Just listening to some of their music and I was thinking what a shame it was they broke up and why? They weren’t exactly a mainstream band so this question may be hard for most people to answer, but I thought it was possible. I know some of the members went and formed The Mars Volta, which were a little more maintstream. Maybe that was a reason, the core members wanted to make it bigger. Just wondering if anyone knew of another reason.
