Grammar: the difference between "be + about + Ving" and "be + about + to V"?

What’s the difference between,
“Oh, dear!” The mother was about fainting.
“Oh, dear!” The mother was about to faint.
Is it meaning? Is it tone? How do I know when to use which one in my writing or speaking?
