Definition so high I can't read stuff, what fix?

I’ve bought a wonderful new monitor/TV combination.
I’ve been setting everything right, and looking around the desktop menu suggested I set a higher number of DPI, but upon attempting to do so I was asked for a windows disc. Is changing the DPI the answer? Is there any other way to get this done?
