Why do people have such a hard time compartmentalizing?

In many discussions people seem to have difficulty compartmentalizing things such as work and personal life, religion and science, opinions and facts, church and state, etc. I have no problems with this and am having difficulty understanding why others are unable, or unwilling to separate things. Discuss?
