What causes some people to hate gays/lesbians/transgender people?

Personally I don’t think anyone should be told what sexuality to have. You are just attracted to who are attracted to. Homosexuality even exists between animals such as penguins and dolphins. However, I have met several individuals who claim to hate gays but cannot give a reasonable answer for doing so.
