When an angel investor (or any investor) invests in a failed business... do they expect that money back or not?

I’ve never started my own business because I have a huge fear of screwing over every investor should it fail. Let’s say an angel investor gets involved. Or my uncle. Or some other kind of investor. In your average situation where money is given to start up a business… does the investor usually expect the money back if the business fails?
