Gas stove (in kitchen) smells strongly of gas if you turn the oven on. I've been told it has always ben this way, but I'm concerned, what's going on?

We moved into an old house a year ago, and I’ve since stopped using the oven because of the strong gas smell that immediately fills the house whenever I would turn the oven on to cook. The pilot light is lit, and when I asked about this, I was told nothing is wrong. You can also smell it when the whole range is off, and you open and close the refrigerator ( like a vaccuum effect?). I have tried to get help regarding this (we rent ) and I am told that it’s been looked at, etc., and nothing is wrong- But I don’t really believe this, so I could use some solid facts to “plead the issue” to my landlord (who happens to be family-doesn’t make it easier). Anybody know? I DO know that smelling gas is a problem, just can’t seem to get anyone to follow-up. Thank you everyone!
