A flaw in Lord of The Rings?

Asked by Starchild_Ice (12points) January 2nd, 2011

Hello there! First time I saw Lord of The Ring I reacted to a obvious flaw. Its right after the party in The Shire.

When Gandalf sees that Bilbo has a strange new ring he asks him about the ring. Bilbo then refers the ring as
“my precious”.Gandalf should have no idea what this ring is at this point in the story. He even need to go away and do research before finding out its The Ring of Power. Yet Gandalf in this early scene says to Bildo.

“Precious?...It has been called that before but not by you…”

That strikes me as odd? Did Gandalf know the ring used to belong to Gollum? This seams a bit weird. Is it a flaw or is there a good explenation to this saying from Gandalf in this scene?
