Why did my water heater explode?

Yesterday morning there was a drip coming from a tube that is connected to the water heater. A couple of hours later, as we were calling a plumber, a noise like a siren startled me and made me jump as it came out of the laundry room. A few seconds later, a loud bang could be heard as the water heater exploded, sending its lid far across the room. Two pieces within were bright burning red. We turned off the water and disconnected electricity in that room.
Is there anything that could have been done to prevent it? Is it a faulty water heater? Or what?
