What was this old tearjerker movie about a dog?

I don’t remember much of it at all. There was a boy and there was a dog. It was an old movie, similar to Old Yeller as far as time period and setting, but not that. I think the dog died at the end, because I know me and my brother were crying for about an hour, but it might have just been a really happy ending.
