If humankind ever developed means to live vicariously through surrogate would it be more helpful or hurtful overall?

If humanity was able to live out their lives through surrogates like the sci-fi movie of the same name would it be more advantageous than not or way more of a disadvantage? Quadriplegics would be able to work, ski, go hiking, people doing dangerous jobs like divers, workers in mines, hazardous material handling would not risk danger. Neither would the military or law enforcement. But would people end up a fat sloppy Jabba The Huts because they would never physically have to do much? Would there be a new form of gang banger or robber because they themselves are not risk?
