Can any image be turned into a vector? (See details)

I have absolutely no experience with vectors. I’m drawing up a graphic for a new company, and I’d like to ultimately have a vector to offer, however I would like to draw it up using Gimp. Can whatever illustration I come up with be converted to a vector? I’m really not sure how this works. Really any tips or tricks would be handy… I’m completely clueless.
