ITunes help?

Anytime I try to access the iTunes store my computer begins to slow down to a creep and eventually iTunes quits responding and I have to “Force Quit” it. It’s not my internet connection as my browser works just fine. Any idea as to what could cause this and how to remedy the situation?
I’m using iTunes version 10.1.2.
