How do you get water spots off glass windows?

The water spots were formed from the sprinkler systems mist hitting some large windows in our house that face the setting sun. The windows look good when the sun isn’t shining on them directly. But when the sun strikes them later in the evening they look bad. I tried windex and soap and water to no avail. Of course I don’t want to experiment with strong chemicals and chance causing damage.
