Where can I find information on life debts?

I’ve heard that some ancient cultures had a tradition whereby if your life was saved by someone, you owed that person a debt for life—or until an event occured in which you were able to repay that debt by saving his/her life.

Is this true? If so, to what cultures did this apply, and how can I find out more about this topic?
