If a Sprint contract is up, and we're now on a month-to-month type schedule, can we add a device without incurring another 2 year contract?

I can’t get any straight answers from the salesmen at the stores. It doesn’t make any sense that if I want to buy the device outright, why should I get sucked into another contract?? We’re already paying top dollar for 3 smartphones unlimited.
